Korban: The Offering, The Command
I have lived
as if a conscripted soldier,
battles of generations
played out
in a small house
on a narrow strait
by a sea never crossed
until I could heed
a different call
and so at long last
this is my offering
commanded from fire and mountain
cleft of rock, an inner
whispering roar
to be placed on the altar
to be yielded to fire
for the sake of forgetting, for
the sake of unstitching my body
from numbness and fear,
long over-dressed
by the edicts of others
to be of service
and not to be seen
and so I toss onto the flames
prohibitions I once mistook
for sacred text,
the mirrors I yielded
to the gaze of others
who can’t see me,
watching the red and the fierce
blue eat them up
and so I say thank you
for this forgetting, this dissembling
from burden to beauty -
commanding myself to remember
to take my freedom inward and outward
as breathe and courage
and say: yes, this is still
a life even if
it is mostly over.
My dear Elana, At last the day has arrived. I am in tears reading this poem. I love the name of the website. At the well.
This is YOUR answer to those who denied you and kept you outside. May many come and drink from your well. May they drink courage, belief, and connection here.
Much love. Eibhlín
Elana, your poetry is equal parts wondrous and inspiring. I am so excited for you as you share your deep Torah with the world.
B’shalom U’vracha,

Elana, what a gorgeous reminder that no matter how much or how little time we have left (and really, who can predict?), our offerings need to be made. Many thanks for your beautiful words.
Dear Elana,
This is beautiful! I will relish visiting your well and learning with you as you create poetry and love for Torah.
Thank you for the invitation and may your website flourish with your words and insight.
Made me tear up this morning and once again now.
Dear Elana,
Congratulations and thank you are both in order here. Congratulations for the journey to freedom you describe in this weeks poem, Korban. And thank you for the richness of the words and images that bring me so deeply into a Torah of forgiveness, courage, honor and upholding the human experience through showing our beauty to each other.
I have a sense you are filled with the fire and that it spills out eventually making its way onto your website!
Celebrating with you,
Roberta Wall
